Before his passing in 1983, Hergé said that if any filmmaker was to adapt his collection of timeless tales following the adventures of a Belgian reporter to the big screen, Steven Spielberg was the only man for the job, and after two decades of trial and error, the cinematic version of Tintin has finally reached our screens with the desired director at its helm. Alongside Spielberg sits Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) maestro Peter Jackson as producer and three of Britain's brightest writers (Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish) who have that almost impossible task of translating the stories from comic strips to 35mm. This 3D motion-capture and CGI extravaganza combines three of Tintin's most beloved outings (The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure) and hits UK multiplexes just before the school half-term.

After discovering an elegant model of the ship the 'Unicorn' at a market, Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) and his loyal dog Snowy are intrigued as to why so many desire it, and comment on the secrets it holds. When the model is stolen, more information surfaces and the pair set out to discover the truth, teaming up, after a surprise meeting, with the boisterous drunkard Captain Haddock (voiced by Andy Serkis). The group's adventure spans the globe, with each destination bringing more danger and that crucial step closer towards unravelling the mystery.

From the moment the picture opens, the film's tone and mood is set: mystery and adventure merged with fun and frolics. The classy, hand-drawn, animated titles use the signature silhouette imagery with style and sophistication, making the wit and wonder evident even before audiences have graced their eyes on the monumental motion capture work.

In a rather lacklustre year for animation, with the only true blossom of beauty being Studio Ghibli's impeccable 'Arrietty', Spielberg's latest thankfully ends this dry-run with a picture that explodes with vibrancy, craftsmanship and realism. Unlike Robert Zemeckis' motion-capture entries (The Polar Express [2004] and A Christmas Carol [2009]); The Adventures of Tintin is an entirely different bunch of blistering blue barnacles – every frame enforces impeccable detail and naturalism, and like the best animated pictures, viewers will forget they are watching digitalised representations in no time. Whether the visuals are mind-blowing as in the all-important action sequences – or brilliantly subtle – like the red, sweat-streaked cheeks and brows of Tintin and Haddock as they trek through a desert – this film is a clear example of just how magnificent technology is in this day and age.

Without a shadow of a doubt this is the year's finest animated entry – expect an Oscar nomination and a deserved win. As well as its tremendous visual flair, the feature's script is a revelation: beautifully written and whimsical dialogue that is frequently hilarious and manages to merge the three classic tales so seamlessly. Considering Hergé's stories are separate volumes, the typing trio behind this movie are able to make a sensible structure with the texts, making the film flow as gracefully as its perfect imagery. As well as the laughs, the script provides great character development for those new to the world of Tintin without insulting audiences with an hour's lesson. Young children will have no trouble picking up who's who in the early stages, before settling back for the incredible roller coaster ride of the second and climatic act.

Action fans will gain greatness from this movie too. Expect high octane chases, pirate swordplay and more bullets than a Sylvester Stallone entry – just a lot less gore and swearing. In fact, although The Adventures of Tintin is action-packed, its PG certificate is justified; I cannot recall anything remotely damaging or frightening for young eyes, so parents have nothing to fear with this one when deciding on their half-term picture.

The film also sees the much needed return of composer John Williams who provides yet another dazzling and effective score. The music captures the essence of the film in an instant and compliments it throughout.

The voice casting is collectively brilliant with Bell and Serkis being the obvious standouts. Bell's inquisitive tone and frequent high-pitched bursts mirror the speech bubbles Tintin utters in the comic panels. When reading a Hergé story, this is exactly how the character sounds in your head. Serkis steals the show as Captain Haddock and is given splendid dialogue to growl through bitter Scottish chords. Haddock's often stupid remarks and forgetfulness is beautifully represented through the animated character. Daniel Craig is also fantastic as the less-than-trustworthy Ivanovich Sakharine while Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are side-splitting as the lovable policing dunces Thomson and Thompson. Plus Snowy is absolutely wonderful.

There is no doubt that Spielberg's adaptation will be top of the box office upon release and hopefully those new to Tintin will be influenced to re-visit the books and television shows of yesteryear and become more involved with one of the century's most beloved and important literary creations.

Verdict: ••••• 'The Adventures of Tintin' is quintessentially the perfect family film and has plenty to offer audiences of all ages. This is an incredibly joyous, thrilling and comically genius adventure. Hergé was onto a winner with his thoughts towards Spielberg and he can rest easy now knowing his tales have been faithfully and beautifully translated into a cinematic masterwork. Great Snakes, it's good.

(Reuters) - Oscar-nominee Tom Cruise kicked off on Thursday the rollout of the fourth installment of the "Mission Impossible" franchise with a limited "fan screening" in Japan ahead of its world premiere next week.
Cruise, 49, returns as super agent Ethan Hunt saving the world yet again in "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" packed with stunts and action scenes, some featuring the world's tallest building -- Dubai's 828-metre (2,716 ft) Burj Khalifa.
In the latest in the series of action blockbusters that has grossed over $2 billion worldwide, Impossible Mission Force IMF.L operative Hunt and fellow agents get blamed for a terrorist bombing of the Kremlin and are forced to run.
The agency is dissolved and the group -- without any resources or backup -- must find a way to clear the agency's name, prevent another attack and avert a nuclear war.
Asked at a press conference for local media broadcast on the movie's Japanese website how he coped with hard training and long hours on the set, Cruise said: "I just love what I do and I do it because I want to entertain."
"I love being a part of the team and telling a story," said the actor dressed in a military green sweatshirt highlighting his muscular arms and torso.
Major parts of the film were shot in Dubai, where it will officially open on December 7, while the action also takes Hunt to Moscow, Budapest and Mumbai.
Paramount Pictures, a subsidiary of Viacom Inc ., said Cruise chose to start the film's tour in Tokyo ahead of the Dubai splash as a gesture to his Japanese fans and the nation that suffered so much from the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and the ensuing nuclear crisis.
The film will be released in Japan on December 16 and in the United States on December 21 with theatrical releases around the world staggered over several weeks.
Two-time Academy Award winner Brad Bird directed the film and the cast include Jeremy Renner, nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2008 war film "The Hurt Locker." Other actors include Simon Pegg and Paula Patton.
Bird won the Oscars for animated films "The Incredibles" released in 2004 and "Ratatouille," released in 2007.
Cruise is producing the film with J.J. Abrams who last teamed up with the actor in 2006 for "Mission Impossible III."
Cruise made his screen debut 30 years ago and since has made 34 films and was involved in a producing role in 17, earned Oscar nominations for leading roles in "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire." He was also nominated for a supporting role in "Magnolia."
Cruise's last film, 2010 action comedy "Knight and Day" co-starring Cameron Diaz, got mixed reviews.
But the Mission Impossible series has been a solid bet both at the box office and with critics. All three installments garnered more than 50 percent of favourable reviews on aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes with the third scoring 70 percent of positive reviews.

When director David Fincher offered Rooney Mara the part of Lisbeth Salander, he laid out the stark reality of what she would be forced to endure. “I told Rooney, ‘You’re going to be emaciated, you have to be naked, you have to get raped [on screen], get pierced, smoke cigarettes, ride a motorcycle,’” Fincher recalls, in this week’s EW cover story. “‘I need you to really concentrate and tell me this is something you want.’” The actress didn’t even flinch. “There were certainly things I was scared to do, but I never thought I wasn’t up for the challenge,” she says. “The motorcycle was the thing I really didn’t want to do. You know, you’re going to be raped, be naked… But as soon as he was like, ‘You’re going to have to ride a motorcycle,’ I was like, ‘Oh, really?’”

Less than two weeks after Mara got the part, she found herself in a room at New York City’s Crosby Street Hotel, surrounded by strangers and about to radically transform her appearance. Hairstylist Danilo Dixon pulled Mara’s lovely brown hair back into a braid, asked if she was ready, and squeezed the scissors. He handed her the foot-long twist in a Ziploc bag (she still has it), then dyed and shaped what remained into Salander’s blue-black butch jag. Mara wasn’t too freaked out until he bleached her eyebrows, which was a tough adjustment. “I needed a moment,” she says. “I just had to process, okay, this is what you look like now.” She recovered quickly, though, and soon headed to Brooklyn to get her eyebrow and ears pierced (she had a nipple pierced in Sweden).

Fincher is obviously comfortable with controversy. Good thing: Fans of the book and the 2009 Swedish film — which stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist and earned a respectable $10.1 million in the U.S. — will be watching closely for any perceived missteps. “We’ve got something very simple to deliver on,” says Fincher. “A gigantic f—ing book that people have very rigid preconceived notions of, to the point that they actually take umbrage with a teaser poster.” Ah, the teaser poster. In June, the Internet erupted over the provocative image of a topless Mara staring blankly into the camera while Craig wraps an arm around her in a pose some found protective. Many commenters thought the image made Lisbeth Salander seem uncharacteristically submissive. “I don’t buy that she’s being protected,” says Fincher. “It’s wholly subjective. I don’t think she looks weak. I don’t think she looks like she’s being protected. She may not look like the character that you had in mind or the character you’ve already seen, but she looks very much like the character in our movie.”

Being stranded on an island has never been this good. The adorable Chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, and their sidekicks, the Chipettes (Jeannette, Brittany and Eleanor), talk about their new film, Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

The Chipmunks with the Chipettes
You have a new film out...
Alvin: Look out for my Oscar-worthy turn on board the cruise ship. You’ll know it when you see it.
Simon: Oh, pur-lease, Alvin. When are you going to stop harping on about that? You’re nothing like Leonardo DiCaprio.
Alvin: You’re just jealous because I had more close-ups than you did in the movie.
Simon: Go munk yourself.

What was it like on board a luxury cruise ship?
Theodore: I was so excited that I nearly pooped myself! The ship was huge.
Alvin: It was A-mazing! Not many people can holiday like the Munksters, that’s for sure.
Simon: I got to meet the captain and learn about reading the stars and how to navigate without a map. That was cool.
Jeannette: That sounds really cool, Simon.
Simon: (Blushing) It really was.

Did the Chipettes like the ship?
Brittany: It was awesome. It had a pool, a spa, a hairdresser, everything. It was like a five-star hotel on water.
Eleanor: It was all-you-can-eat for every meal!
Theodore: I ate all-you-can-eat pizza one night and couldn’t sleep.
Alvin: That’s because you ate too much cheese, Theodore. We already talked about this.

After all this five-star luxury, you end up washed up on a deserted island?
Alvin: Yep, it was pretty rough. We were lucky to survive. We’re heroes, really.
Theodore: I swallowed a lot of water.
Brittany: We were lucky we didn’t drown like rats. I think I’m going to need counselling.

What was the best thing about being stranded on an island?
Brittany:  The sunshine and the beach. It was all so pretty!
Eleanor: The amazing birds and flowers.
Simon: I’d have to agree with Eleanor — the biodiversity was incredible. There were birds of paradise and species of plants I’d never seen before.
Theodore: I liked all the juicy tropical fruit. Yummy!
Alvin: For me? It had to be the surf. I’m practically a pro now!
Jeannette: It was having time out from our busy lives back home. It was fun to go back to nature and get in touch with our animal instincts.
Alvin:Poo-ey! Animal instincts? Speak for yourself, Missy. (Laughs)

Were you inspired to come up with new songs?
Brittany:  You betcha! The Chipettes have come up with a new album of tropical songs, which are going to be great for summer parties — the perfect August playlist.
Alvin: Just like the lovely Chipettes here, the Munks are always coming up with new tracks and laying them down. It’s all up here (points to his head) and in here (points to his heart). The next time you see us, we’re gonna rock you like a hurricane!
Twentieth Century Fox

Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked opens in local cinemas on Dec 15.

This is not only a movie for the thinking man. One is allowed to sit back 80 minutes, laugh a lot and leave the cinema satisfied. There is no need to discuss and interpret, the message is delivered in nicely-served bits of satirist speeches which are easy to follow. Our civilization is based upon lies. So how does Roman Polanski achieve it to present us this cheerless idea in such an incredibly cheerful way?

It's the actors and the characters they play. They are rich, they are cultivated, but not too aloof. One still is able to identify with the characters. The woman with the big heart for Africa played by Jodie Foster and married to the slightly corpulent shop-owner played by John C. Reilly. The other couple consists of the most charming investment consultant played by Kate Winslet and the busy yet stylish lawyer, wonderfully acted by Christoph Waltz. The reason for their little meeting is a fight between two boys. Two civilized married couples having a civilized meeting. If there's something negative, it's sad behind the other's back. But slowly the good attributes become ironically stretched, blurred, we know the roles of the single characters so well that consequently only hate remains. We hate the super-human Jodie Foster. We hate the darling Kate Winslet for her being blatantly drunk and not being able to control herself. We hate John C. Reilly for his diplomacy and simple-mindedness. Only Christoph Waltz remains jet-set. The scene in which he talks to John C. Reilly's mother on the phone is so great you can't draw a border between noble showmanship and sheer arrogance.

Great actors, great story (it reminded me a bit of Clybourne Park, but it was better), not too thoughtful, not too thoughtless - but all chewed. I love the moment of cracking the nutshell of a movie, the moment of realization. Sadly, Roman Polanski left that nutshell out. What remains still is very delightful, though.

Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) has always been the smartest man in the room...until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large-Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris)-and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder-a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by Professor Moriarty. The cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead of Holmes as he spins a web of death and destruction-all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

When it comes to set visits, you can’t get more grandiose than the one for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the sequel to Warner Bros.’ 2009 smash hit. The location is Waddesdon Manor, a French chateau-style manor deep in the English countryside. It is bitterly cold as we observe an explosive night shoot involving a dozen or so horse-drawn carriages. In between takes, we had the chance to catch up with director Guy Ritchie, Robert Downey, Jr. (Sherlock Holmes himself) and Jude Law (who plays his partner Dr. Watson).

Having dropped out of filming Cowboys & Aliens to reprise his role as the world’s most famous consulting detective, Downey was in high spirits when we asked him how it felt to be back for the sequel. "Ever since Mr. Law and I met, the chuckles, the fun and the happiness come naturally. But we are serious about getting on with our business as Holmes and Watson. You could say we definitely like getting sweaty together!"

Law agrees, noting the great onscreen chemistry the two actors share. "We like the work, and we find working together fun," he declares. "Every so often you get to play wonderful characters maybe at the wrong time in your life. And sometimes, the right character comes along at the right time. I think we both felt that was what happened with our roles in Sherlock Holmes. It wasn't just happening individually, it was also watching someone else have that experience. We're working hard, but we're also enjoying it. It's the perfect balance."

Filmed on location in England and France, A Game of Shadows introduces us to Holmes’ most infamous enemy, a certain Professor Moriarty, played by British actor Jared Harris (“Mad Men”). His presence promises a much darker experience than we witnessed in the first film.

"It's nice to have Moriarty, who is arguably the most infamous intellectual villain ever," director Guy Ritchie divulges, noting how impressed he was with Harris’ performance, "Jared has been really great, and I keep telling him every day that he is significantly evil, which he finds most flattering. His take on the character works really well, and it's been a pleasure to work with him. We definitely made the right choice when it came to casting for the role."

Ritchie himself was scheduled to work on the film adaptation of DC Comics’ Lobo, but when the studio rushed through plans for the second Sherlock Holmes, he was quick to take up the director’s mantle again. "We enjoyed the last one so much, it would only seem churlish not to return and do another one. I like filming in the U.K., as I can sleep in my own bed tonight, which I'm very happy about.”

So, Moriarty aside, how will this film differ from the first? "The first Sherlock Holmes introduced many members of the audience to the character for the first time," Downey comments, "and the nice thing is second time around we are able to honor Conan Doyle even more by pretty much making this a very thrilling story not unlike the original books he wrote. I think, to be honest, it's a tiny bit broader and it's a little bit darker, just because of the situation we're up against. Moriarty reaches out and touches us with his evil quite a bit, and as a result we're in pretty bad shape almost all the time.”

Law agrees, observing that it is the trend in Hollywood to make sequels darker than their predecessors. "I don't know why there is that trend, but it does seem to be so. We went in with that in mind, and the threat of Moriarty and the presence of such an evil mind certainly leads it that way. A lot of the film this time around isn't set in London, so there's a real sense of the characters 'living out of a bag.’ I think as a result it's a lot more gritty and perilous than the first film was. Anything can happen!"

Of course, when it comes to making sequels, the three readily admit that they were apprehensive at first about recapturing the magic a second time. "Whereas before we didn't know what we were walking into, this time around it was a little more daunting. But we can only really do it one way, and that's by doing it full steam ahead," Downey tells us with a smile on his face.

"I was nervous about recreating the same formula again for the sequel," reveals Law. "I mean, how do you step in and start that up again? Once we got underway, though, it just happened and everything clicked together like it did before."

Can Law see it carrying on as a new franchise? "There's certainly the material, it's not like there isn't a load of stuff we could do. There are so many great stories and the characters are so strong, which is why they've remained so popular over the last hundred or so years. There's still such a hunger for it, whether it's on TV or film. There's something about those two together that people just get, it's an ingredient that they find pleasing. I'd be thrilled to do another one, but it always relies on if enough people see it. If they want us to do another one, we'll do another one."

The final word on this matter, as ever, has to go to Downey, who tells us gleefully, "We're all ready to hit you with Sherlock 3 right now. We're ready and raring to go!"

I saw this film at Telluride by the Sea (Portsmouth, NH) prior to its general release. This is not a film I would choose to see normally, based on its subject matter. However, as a festival-goer, this was what was offered for the late evening screening. This film is visually stunning, and masterfully composed. You know early-on that a Columbine-style ending is inevitable, nonetheless hope that some miracle may yet occur to avert this disaster. Swinton is absolutely magnificent (as always) as the mother desperately trying to cope with raising a psychopathic child, but equally impressive are the performances of the actors who portray the developmental stages of Kevin from early childhood to the brink of adulthood. What elevates this film is the visual and musical narrative that accompanies the initial time-skipping introduction and then the more linear progression of Kevin's growth to its final, terrible conclusion. Interestingly, the emotional crescendo of the film occurs not near the end when Kevin carries out his horrific violence, but rather in the middle of the film at moments when we observe the impossibility of living a "normal" family life with a child who is incapable of feeling or expressing the human emotions that bind us together.
